Handshake
Crypto Overview
Overview
Handshake (HNS) is a decentralized protocol designed to create an alternative to existing Domain Name System (DNS) root servers and certificate authorities. The project aims to create a more secure, decentralized, and censorship-resistant DNS infrastructure.
Intended Utility
The primary purpose of Handshake is to enable users to register, buy, sell, and manage top-level domains (TLDs) without relying on centralized authorities. HNS tokens are used for domain registration, auctions, and governance of the protocol.
Actual Utility and Adoption
The protocol is actively being used for its intended purpose, with thousands of Handshake domains registered and operational. The ecosystem includes multiple name resolvers, registrars, and blockchain explorers. Notable projects like Namebase provide user-friendly interfaces for domain registration and management.
Technical Implementation
Handshake operates on its own proof-of-work blockchain, securing the network through mining. The protocol implements unique features like blind auctions for domain names and integration with existing DNS infrastructure.
Token Distribution
The initial distribution included allocations to open-source developers and organizations, with approximately 7.5% reserved for the development team. The majority of tokens were distributed through airdrops to open-source developers and other stakeholders. Vesting periods were implemented for team allocations.
