Livepeer is a decentralized video streaming network built on Ethereum that aims to provide cost-effective video infrastructure services. The protocol enables users to broadcast video content while network participants contribute their computing resources to handle video processing tasks.
Intended Utility
The LPT token serves as a work token that coordinates the network's video transcoding services. Token holders can stake LPT to operate as transcoder nodes, earning fees for processing video streams. Broadcasters pay for services using ETH, which is distributed to active transcoders based on their stake and work performed.
Actual Utility Assessment
On-chain data shows active usage of the network for video transcoding services, with multiple streaming applications built on top of Livepeer's infrastructure. The protocol processes millions of minutes of video monthly, demonstrating real utility. Development activity remains consistent, with regular protocol upgrades and improvements.
Token Distribution and Governance
Initial token distribution allocated 63% to the community, with the remaining split between team, investors, and advisors. Team tokens have extended vesting schedules over 3 years. The project maintains transparent governance through the Livepeer Improvement Proposal (LIP) system.
Revenue Model
The protocol generates revenue through legitimate service provision, where broadcasters pay for actual video processing work. There is no lending or interest-bearing component in the core protocol.
