Numeraire (NMR) is the native cryptocurrency of Numerai, a decentralized hedge fund and data science competition platform. The token was created in 2017 with the purpose of incentivizing data scientists to submit accurate price predictions for financial markets.

Intended Utility

The primary purpose of NMR is to serve as a staking mechanism within the Numerai ecosystem. Data scientists stake NMR tokens when submitting their market predictions. If their predictions are accurate, they earn additional NMR tokens as rewards. If their predictions are poor, they lose their staked tokens.

Actual Utility and Adoption

The token is actively used as intended within the Numerai platform. As of 2024, thousands of data scientists participate in the weekly tournaments, staking NMR tokens and submitting predictions. The platform processes millions of predictions and distributes NMR rewards based on performance.

Token Distribution and Founder Involvement

The initial distribution of NMR tokens was done through airdrops to early platform participants. The project team maintains a transparent approach to token economics, with clear documentation of token allocation and usage. Numerai, as an organization, holds a portion of tokens for future platform development and rewards.

Technical Implementation

NMR operates on the Ethereum blockchain as an ERC-20 token. The smart contracts governing the staking and reward mechanisms have been audited and operate transparently. The platform's code is open-source, allowing for community review and verification.

Revenue Model
