Reddit Moons were ERC-20 tokens originally created as a reward system for contributing to the r/cryptocurrency subreddit. Users earned MOONS for posting quality content and participating in community governance. The tokens could be used for purchasing Reddit premium memberships, unlocking special features, and participating in community governance.
Business Model Evaluation
The business model was centered around incentivizing community participation and content creation. The token represented actual ownership of community points and governance rights. Reddit discontinued MOONS in November 2023, citing regulatory concerns.
Real-World Adoption
Prior to discontinuation, MOONS had significant adoption within the r/cryptocurrency community with millions of tokens distributed to users for their contributions. The token was actively traded on exchanges and used for its intended governance purposes.
Platform Development
Development was primarily handled by Reddit's team. The token operated on Ethereum's network and later on Arbitrum Nova for scaling. Development ceased with the token's discontinuation.
Token Distribution
Distribution was primarily through community participation, with users earning tokens for contributions. Reddit retained a portion for platform development and community initiatives.
